Sky Arte documentary explores Lina Wertmüller's life and career
The documentary 'Dietro gli occhiali bianchi' (Behind the White Glasses) airs on Sky Arte on Friday, March 19. It focuses on Lina Wertmüller, the first woman ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director, for her masterpiece 'Pasqualino Settebellezze' (1975). The film includes never-before-seen footage shot at Cinecittà when she was assistant director to Federico Fellini on '8½'. It traces the locations of her most famous films, revealing the artistic and human universe of a woman who, always faithful to her ironic and grotesque vein, left her mark on cinema, theater, television, and music. Exclusive interviews feature Giancarlo Giannini, Marina Cicogna, Sophia Loren, Martin Scorsese, Harvey Keitel, Nastassja Kinski, and critic John Simon. The documentary contains a long series of unpublished videos, images, and songs written by Wertmüller herself. Directed by Valerio Ruiz, her assistant director and close collaborator, it is a personal and poetic portrait.
