Sky Arte Documentary Explores Dante's Influence on Art

A documentary titled 'Dante – La visione nell’arte' will air on Sky Arte on Sunday, May 30, revisiting a major exhibition in Forlì dedicated to the Tuscan poet seven hundred years after his death. The exhibition, a collaboration between the Musei San Domenico di Forlì and the Gallerie degli Uffizi in Florence, features over three hundred works, with about fifty on loan from the Uffizi. It reconstructs the intimate relationship between Dante and art through works by artists from the 13th to the 20th century who translated the visionary power of the Divine Comedy into images. The documentary is divided into eleven short chapters exploring Dantean themes: from the Last Judgment to the celestial vision of Paradise, including the journey through Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso, and famous characters like Paolo and Francesca, Count Ugolino, and Beatrice. It also covers portraits of Dante, depictions of Lucifer, and the Virgin. Narrated by Miriam Galanti, the documentary features four key figures who contributed to the exhibition. Footage includes symbolic locations in Forlì, where Dante found refuge after leaving Arezzo in autumn 1302 and occasionally returned. The exhibition repositions Dante not only as father of the Italian language but as a visionary storyteller in images, an inexhaustible source of inspiration for artists of all eras.
