cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

A documentary titled 'Il Mattino e la Serao – Una storia lunga 125 anni' will air on Friday, June 23 on Sky Arte HD, marking the 125th anniversary of the founding of Il Mattino, a newspaper established in Naples by Edoardo Scarfoglio and Matilde Serao. The film explores the past and present of the newspaper, which quickly became the most important voice of Southern Italy. To honor the anniversary, Il Mattino has instituted a literary prize named after Matilde Serao, a journalist and writer. A jury composed of the entire newspaper staff and fifty of its most authoritative opinion leaders awarded the prize to writer Antonia Arslan, author of 'La masseria delle allodole'. For the occasion, Arslan wrote a short play that was performed during a gala evening at the Teatro San Ferdinando in Naples. The performance included an 'impossible interview' with Serao, portrayed by actors Claudio Di Palma and Cristina Donadio, while Mariano Rigillo recited verses by Salvatore Di Giacomo.
