Sky Arte documentary 'ArtQuake' explores art and earthquake recovery in Italy

Sky Arte HD will air the documentary 'ArtQuake ‒ L’arte salvata' on Tuesday, September 26, 2017. The film examines the relationship between communities, natural disasters, artistic creation, and heritage protection, focusing on how earthquakes have damaged Italy's cultural patrimony and how restoration and new art projects aid social recovery. Experts and witnesses discuss reconstruction, highlighting the need for preventive safeguards and subsequent restoration. The documentary covers areas hit by recent quakes: Amatrice, the 'bunker' in Spoleto, and the Ducal Palace of Sassuolo, where artworks are stored after the 2016 Central Italy earthquake and the 2012 Emilia earthquake. It also features the recovery of the vaults of the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi and the restoration of the Basilica of Collemaggio in L'Aquila. A segment focuses on new artworks, narrated by Achille Bonito Oliva, who guides viewers through the 'Terrae Motus' exhibition at the Royal Palace of Caserta in 2013 and Gibellina, home to Alberto Burri's 'Grande Cretto'.
