Sky Arte docufilm traces Arte Povera's history

other · 2026-04-26

A docufilm titled 'Arte Povera – Appunti per la storia' will air on Sky Arte on Sunday, April 27. Directed by Andrea Bettinetti with narration by Giuseppe Cederna and produced by Michele Bongiorno (Good Day Films) with Sky Arte, the film revisits the origins of Arte Povera, which began with Germano Celant's manifesto 'Arte Povera, appunti per una guerriglia' published in Flash Art in November 1967. Celant, a young critic from Genoa, called for artists to prioritize process over product by introducing unconventional materials. The documentary travels through key sites related to the movement's birth and development, including Museo Castello di Rivoli, Collezione Giancarlo e Danna Olgiati in Lugano, Giulio Paolini's studio, Fondazione Merz, Magazzino Art in New York, Giardini della Venaria with works by Giuseppe Penone, Cittadellarte di Pistoletto, Galleria di Lia Rumma, Fondazione Calzolari in Fossombrone, and GAM in Turin. It weaves together installations, exhibition spaces, and archival materials. Many original protagonists appear, including Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Giovanni Anselmo. The late Celant contributes through footage recorded during the 2019 Jannis Kounellis retrospective at Fondazione Prada in Venice.
