Sky Arte airs documentary on Hollywood legend Sam Spiegel

Sky Arte will broadcast the documentary 'Sam Spiegel – Una storia di riscatto' on Sunday, May 8. The film, which won Best Documentary Feature at the Oxford International Film Festival 2019, traces the turbulent life of the legendary Hollywood producer. Born in Poland, Spiegel fled Europe in 1933 to escape Nazism and war. After a period as an illegal immigrant in the United States, he reinvented himself as a pioneer of independent cinema. Spiegel had a preference for complex narratives featuring charismatic heroes battling the world. He is the only producer to have won three Oscars as sole producer of three films: 'On the Waterfront' (1954), 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' (1957), and 'Lawrence of Arabia' (1962). Considered the last mogul of Hollywood's Golden Age, and the most enigmatic and controversial among its producers, the documentary also explores his relationships with stars like Marlon Brando and Katharine Hepburn.
