Sky Arte airs documentary on Caravaggio-Velázquez museum exchange

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

Sky Arte will broadcast the documentary 'The Last Caravaggio – Merisi e Velázquez, due sguardi sulla realtà' on Thursday, June 6, in prime time. The film documents an unprecedented cultural exchange between the National Gallery in London and the Gallerie d'Italia in Naples. Caravaggio's 'Martyrdom of Saint Ursula', his last documented work, is on loan to the National Gallery until July 21 as part of the museum's bicentennial celebrations. In return, two early Velázquez portraits—the Virgin Immaculate and Saint John the Evangelist—traveled from the UK to Italy. The documentary features art historians analyzing both masters, highlighting Caravaggio's ambiguous emotions and his final self-portrait, as well as Velázquez's fidelity to reality, exemplified by his depiction of a weary King Philip IV.
