Skulptur Projekte Münster Expands to Marl for 2017 Edition

exhibition · 2026-05-05

For the first time in its history, Skulptur Projekte Münster will expand beyond the city limits, partnering with the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten in Marl, 60 km away. The curatorial team—artistic director Kasper König with Britta Peters and Marianne Wagner—announced the decentralization for the 2017 edition, following the model of Art Basel City and documenta's Athens preview. The collaboration includes projects like Skulptur exchange, Artists working in both places, Models (a thematic installation at Glaskasten using archival models), Authors in residence (a writing project led by Monika Einck), and the symposium Nothing Permanent (September 13–15, in partnership with the Henry Moore Institute). The expansion responds to the growing site-specific legacy of past editions, which have become intertwined with postwar West German history. Marl, a city of 85,000 inhabitants, will host these initiatives, leveraging the museum's mission aligned with the decennial sculpture exhibition.
