Skira launches Milestones series with William Kentridge monograph

publication · 2026-04-26

Skira has released the first volume of its new series "Milestones: At the Heart of Creation," edited by Denise Wendel-Poray, dedicated to William Kentridge. The book covers the South African artist's career from charcoal drawing to theater and opera, featuring unpublished studio photos, an essay by Stephen Clingman, and an interview with Julian Barnes. Kentridge was in Milan for the launch, where two exhibitions opened: "Sharpen Your Philosophy" at Lia Rumma gallery and "More Sweetly Play the Dance and Remembering Morandi" at Palazzo Citterio. The latter is a video installation and cardboard sculptures homage to Giorgio Morandi. The monograph highlights Kentridge's key milestones: monotypes, charcoal, animation, theater, opera, the studio as subject, the lecture as artwork, and the Centre for The Less Good Idea in Johannesburg. Kentridge reflected on his freedom to move between media, defying the expectation to progress from drawing to oil painting in 1970s South Africa. The series plans to cover 30 artists, including Alex Katz and Georg Baselitz.
