Skate Ramp Installation Transforms Deconsecrated Church in Cremona
An inclined surface resembling a skate ramp has been installed in the deconsecrated Church of San Carlo in Cremona, Italy. The project, titled 'Sospeso nel moto con addebito di vuoto,' is a collaboration between artist Guglielmo Castelli and curator Fabio Cherstich. The sloping structure rises from the floor to become a continuous backdrop, guiding the viewer's gaze and suggesting constant motion. Castelli's pictorial silhouettes appear unstable, as if caught in a precarious balance before a trick. The installation incorporates baroque-inspired moving skies that create an unstable depth, shifting as the viewer moves. A performative element involving choir, strings, and references to John Cage adds rhythm to the space. When inactive, the work becomes a freely traversable environment where visitors move between images and architecture without a prescribed direction. The piece is supported by Mendes Wood DM (São Paulo, Brussels, New York, Paris), Sylvia Kouvali (London, Piraeus), Ph Form Group, and Andrea Rossetti.
