Six Swedish Jewelry Artists at Palazzo Mocenigo in Venice

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Curated by art historian Inger Wastberg, the exhibition 'Transformation. Sei artisti svedesi' brings six avant-garde Swedish jewelry artists to Venice's Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo. The artists—Agnes Larsson, Catarina Hällzon, Hanna Hedman, Märta Mattsson, Sara Borgegård Älgå, and Tobias Alm—are little known in Italy but well represented at the National Museum in Stockholm. Their works draw on Sweden's early 20th-century industrial design and art traditions, referencing historical figures like Vivianna Torun, who brought Swedish elegance to Europe and became a leading name at Georg Jensen in Copenhagen. Torun's use of silver and moonstone in minimalist forms resonates in contemporary creations. Catarina Hällzon (Örebro, 1976) combines silver with leather and fish scales to celebrate Sweden's fishing heritage. Hanna Hedman (Stockholm, 1980) transforms silver into lace-like pieces inspired by endangered animal and plant life. Märta Mattsson (Stockholm, 1982) uses silver to support resins, wood, lacquer, and stones in insect-shaped jewelry. Sara Borgegård Älgå (Stockholm, 1980) employs iron and cord to evoke mechanical worlds and artificial landscapes. Agnes Larsson (Stockholm, 1980) uses coal, horsehair, and aluminum for totemic, tribal necklaces titled 'Remains.' Tobias Alm (Stockholm, 1985) creates object-jewelry referencing 18th- and 19th-century chatelaines, using leather, gold-plated silver, steel, velvet, and nylon for contemporary accessories.
