Six New Art Books: From Celant's Last Project to a New Philosophical System
A roundup of six recent art and architecture publications. The Domenico Gnoli monograph, published by Progetto Prada Arte, is Germano Celant's final curatorial and editorial project, featuring a short but incisive text by Celant and a rediscovered 1983 essay by Italo Calvino. The exhibition catalogue 'La fabbrica del Rinascimento' (Marsilio, 2022) explores creative processes, market, and production in Vicenza between 1550 and 1585, with a section on art value and collecting. Mondadori releases a large-format anniversary edition of Neil Gaiman's 'Coraline' (2002) with new illustrations by Aurélie Neyret replacing Dave McKean's originals. Graham Harman's 'Object-Oriented Ontology: A New Theory of Everything' (Carbonio, 2021) is introduced as an accessible manual, with a chapter titled 'Aesthetics as the Root of All Philosophy'; Harman appeared on ArtReview's Power 100 in 2014 and 2015. Franco Purini's 'Discorso sull'architettura' (Marsilio, 2022) is described by Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi as 'reactionary', arguing architecture lost its deep content in the early 21st century and aiming to restore its 'magical terrestrial writing'. Finally, 'Milano globale. Il mondo visto da qui' (24 ORE Cultura, 2021) documents the MUDEC's permanent collection reinstallation, with rooms covering Milan in the Spanish world, Asia's global dimension, the scramble for Africa, multicultural cities, and Afro-descendants in global Milan.
