Six masterpieces from Pinacoteca di Ancona on loan to Musei Capitolini for Jubilee
The Musei Capitolini in Rome have opened a new exhibition titled "Tiziano, Lotto, Crivelli e Guercino" on their ground floor, inaugurating events linked to the Jubilee. The show features six works from the Pinacoteca civica Podesti in Ancona, including five altarpieces and one tempera on panel. The exhibition aims to nationally promote the Ancona collection and highlight a crucial period in the history of taste, collecting, and museology in the Marche region. The works span the 15th to 17th centuries, showcasing cross-pollination between artistic currents. Key pieces include Titian's "Pala Gozzi" (1520), his first signed and dated altarpiece, commissioned by Dubrovnik merchant Luigi Gozzi, with a background depicting Venice's skyline; Titian's "Pala Cornovi della Vecchia" (1558), his first Crucifixion scene, characterized by dark scenography and thick brushwork; Olivuccio di Ciccarello's "Circoncisione di Gesù Bambino" on poplar wood, likely the central panel of a triptych in Gothic style; Carlo Crivelli's "Madonna col Bambino," featuring the Virgin in a gold-leaf mantle with pearls and rubies, and a goldfinch symbolizing the Passion; Guercino's "Immacolata Concezione" (1656), a realistic and symbolic representation beyond Counter-Reformation dictates; and Lorenzo Lotto's "Pala dell'Alabarda," a monumental sacred conversation with Venetian tradition, showing columns, drapery, and moonlit skies.
