Six Lesser-Known Gaudí Works in Barcelona Beyond the Sagrada Família

architecture-design · 2026-05-03

Beaux Arts magazine highlights six remarkable but lesser-known works by Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) in Barcelona, coinciding with the centenary of his death. The Casa Vicens (1883–1885), Gaudí's first private house, was commissioned by stockbroker Manuel Vicens and opened to the public in 2017 after restoration; it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005. The Torre Bellesguard (1900–1909), built for the Figueras family, opened in 2019 and features a 33-meter tower symbolizing Christ's age. The Casa Calvet (1897), commissioned by the heirs of textile industrialist Pere Martir Calvet, won Barcelona's best building prize in 1900 but remains a private residence. The Finca Güell (1884), commissioned by Eusebi Güell i Bacigalupi, includes the Porta del Drac dragon gate, while the Palau Güell (1886–1890) served as the Güell family home. The Colònia Güell church crypt (1908–1914) was left unfinished when Güell fell ill, but its innovations later influenced the Sagrada Família. All sites are accessible except Casa Calvet.
