Six Korean Architects Showcased in Rome Exhibition
From February 3 to 21, 2017, the Fondazione Pastificio Cerere in Rome will showcase 'Sections of Autonomy. Six Korean Architects.' Curated by Choi Won-joon and Luca Galofaro, the exhibition features six architects: Choi Moon-gyu, Jang Yoon-gyoo, Kim Jong-kyu, Kim Jun-sung, Kim Seung-hoy, and Kim Young-joon. The display, designed by LGSMA, utilizes 'islands' to highlight each architect's work. The title signifies their collective independence, which arose during South Korea's transformation in the late 1990s to early 2000s. Choi Won-joon emphasizes the country's swift growth despite scarce resources. This exhibition presents a generation of architects who studied abroad, prioritize regional identity, and move away from the 'archistar' concept, with Seoul's mountains offering a common visual backdrop.
