Six alternative search engines to try as Google shifts to AI

At the Google I/O 2026 event, the company revealed a significant transformation of its Search functionality, shifting towards a conversational and AI-centric model. This includes AI agents that can alert users about events, such as tours for their favorite bands. Elizabeth Reid, who heads the Search division at Google, described this as "the most substantial enhancement to our iconic search box since it was introduced over 25 years ago." Users now have the option to activate AI mode or view AI Overviews with chat interfaces, making Google resemble ChatGPT. The announcement faced backlash, with many users feeling that tech firms are imposing AI unnecessarily. In 2024, a U.S. District Court determined that Google unlawfully sustained a monopoly in online search. In light of this, six alternative search engines have been recommended: Kagi ($5/month, ad-free, customizable lenses), DuckDuckGo (free, no data collection, opt-out AI), Startpage (Google proxy that removes personal data), &udm=14 (modifies Google searches to exclude AI overviews), Brave (browser and search engine with third-party "Goggles" for tailored results), and Ecosia (environmentally conscious, donating 80% of profits to tree-planting initiatives).
