Site Brooklyn's 'Landscape Natural and Urban' exhibition juried by Art Forecast

Art Forecast was invited to jury an exhibition for Site Brooklyn on the theme 'Landscape Natural and Urban'. After reviewing hundreds of applications, the selection is now live along with a curatorial essay. The exhibition is divided into five groups, or 'walls', with the first group now presented. The juror notes that the process prompted a complete reevaluation of landscape as a genre. The curatorial statement argues that landscape art is not solely about place but about how we relate to the physical world, citing works by Deborah Kennedy (Statue of Liberty battling a waterspout), Janet Stafford (vignettes), Gerrit Von Ommering and Tom Crawford (bird's-eye views), and Alex Clark (police helicopter beams). Group 1 includes works by James Mullen (trompe-l'œil of photographs over a landscape painting), Patty Neal (oil painting mistaken for a photograph), Stan Schnier (dreamy photograph of a harbor in the late 1800s), Hanying Xu, Loraine Stephanson, Elena Loderer, and Kristin Malin. The juror plans to share the complete exhibition over the following weeks.
