Sisma80: 40 years after the Irpinia earthquake through photography

exhibition · 2026-04-27

On November 23, 1980, at 19:34, a 90-second earthquake struck Irpinia and Naples, remembered 40 years later through the Sisma80 photography project. Promoted by associations tribunali138 and noos aps, and conceived by Luciano Ferrara (born 1950 in Cimitile), known for his cycle on femminielli begun in 1979, the project involves twenty photographers including Peppe Avallone, Mimmo Jodice, Annalisa Piromallo, and the Fotosud agency. A related exhibition, originally scheduled for November 23 but postponed due to the pandemic, and a book published by Iod Edizioni (available from December) feature testimonies from journalists and university professors. The initiative honors victims and highlights the role of photojournalism in documenting the earthquake and Italy. The Terrae Motus collection, initiated by Lucio Amelio and now at the Reggia di Caserta, also contributed to drawing attention to the devastated areas.
