Siracusa Greek Theatre 2025 Season: Sophocles, Aristophanes, and Contemporary Directors

The 60th season of classical performances at the Greek Theatre of Syracuse, organized by Fondazione INDA (Istituto Nazionale del Dramma Antico), runs in 2025 under the interim superintendence of Marina Valensise until the appointment of Daniele Pitteri. The season features Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus directed by Robert Carsen, with Giuseppe Sartori reprising the title role, and Sophocles' Electra directed by Roberto Andò starring Sonia Bergamasco. Aristophanes' Lysistrata is directed by Serena Sinigaglia, and the cycle concludes with the Iliad directed by Giuliano Peparini. Carsen will return in 2026 to direct Antigone, completing the Labdacid trilogy. The 59th season (2024) sold 170,000 tickets across 46 performances, generating €5 million in revenue. Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli stated that everyone should visit Syracuse at least once. INDA emphasizes contemporary translations (Giorgio Ieranò for Electra) and original music by composers such as Giovanni Sollima and Filippo del Corno. The institute also runs the Scuola dell'Adda (Accademia d'arte del dramma antico) and the Festival del Teatro Classico dei Giovani in Palazzolo Acreide, which received the European Award for Cultural Heritage in 2024 in the civic engagement category. Over 2,000 students from Italian and European high schools participate annually.
