Singaporean artists explore complex Malaysia ties through film and theater
Singapore's contemporary arts scene is examining the nation's intricate historical relationship with Malaysia through recent cinematic and theatrical works. Anthony Chen's 2019 film Wet Season features a Malaysian Chinese teacher, Ling, portrayed by Golden Horse Award-winning actress Yeo Yann Yann, who remains an outsider in Singapore despite years of residence. The film uses weather and language contrasts—grey Singapore versus sunny Malaysia, and the status of Chinese dialects—to highlight cultural divides. This reflection coincides with significant anniversaries, including 2015's SG50 independence celebrations and 2019's bicentennial of British arrival. Wild Rice theatre company's productions, such as the 2015 epic Hotel by Alfian Sa'at and Marcia Vanderstraaten, revived in June 2020, span a century to contrast pre-merger multiethnic optimism with post-9/11 tensions. Another 2019 play, Merdeka, co-written by Alfian Sa'at and Neo Hai Bin, critiques colonial narratives through a book club dismantling Stamford Raffles' legacy. These works, including Tan Pin Pin's short film Pineapple Town in the SG50 anthology 7 Letters, address contemporary anxieties about political space and historical awareness. Clarissa Oon authored this analysis for ArtReview Asia's Spring 2020 issue.
