Singapore's NTU CCA and ICA face programming cuts amid institutional shifts

institutional · 2026-04-20

From March 2021, the NTU Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) in Singapore will forfeit its exhibition and studio spaces at Gillman Barracks, retaining solely its administrative offices. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) refers to this change as a step towards recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic. Director Ute Meta Bauer pointed out that a decline in funding from Singapore's Economic Development Board (EDB) contributed to this shift, with transformation talks commencing two years earlier. The Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (ICA) lost its director and curatorial team in late 2020, leaving positions unfilled. Currently, ICA's programming emphasizes work from students and faculty, while both institutions are enhancing connections with their educational affiliates, which may lead to fewer public programs. Past exhibitions at CCA featured artists like Amar Kanwar and Yang Fudong.
