Singapore Cricket Club: 175 Years of Cricket, Community, and Colonial Heritage

Established in 1852 by 28 British military officers and members of the mercantile community, the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) has been integral to Singapore's social and sporting culture for almost 175 years. Situated on the historic Padang field, the club has hosted pivotal national events, such as victory parades after World War II and National Day celebrations. Its clubhouse, constructed in 1884, showcases a mix of preserved ironwork and brick additions, standing in contrast to the modern skyline. Membership begins at S$4,000 (€2,690) annually, appealing to around 5,000 locals and expatriates involved in cricket, rugby, and 11 other sports. Club president Martin Goerojo highlights the importance of fostering community through various competitions and social gatherings. As the club approaches its 175th anniversary next year, Goerojo reflects on their role as 'guardians of the Padang,' while staff maintain a personal connection with members. The recently renovated Main Lounge, designed by Studio HP under Rashi Tulshyan, blends tradition with modern aesthetics. Although the SCC is a listed building, it remains open to evolving its heritage alongside contemporary design.
