Singapore Biennale 2022 personified as 'Natasha' explores non-human consciousness and posthuman themes
Running from 16 October 2022 to 19 March 2023, the 2022 Singapore Biennale was uniquely titled 'Natasha' rather than following a conventional theme. Curators Binna Choi, Nida Ghouse, Ala Younis, and June Yap sought to inspire fresh insights regarding consciousness and interconnectedness. Hosted at Tanjong Pagar Distripark, the exhibition emphasized multi-species care and showcased works such as Aarti Sunder's 'Ghost Cut: Some Clear Pixels Among Many Black Boxes' (2021), Ali Yass's 'Die Flut (The Flood)' (2022), and Natasha Tontey's 'Garden Amidst the Flame; Lacuna for Compassion' (2022). While the biennale shifted from a typical Southeast Asian focus to reflect post-pandemic feelings, some critics argued it did not present significant transformations.
