Singapore Biennale 2022 appoints four co-artistic directors for October opening

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

Four international figures will lead the seventh Singapore Biennale as co-artistic directors: Binna Choi, Nida Ghouse, June Yap, and Ala Younis. The event runs from 18 October 2022 to 19 March 2023 at the Singapore Art Museum. While Southeast Asia remains its immediate context, this edition will explore unfamiliar terrains beyond geography. The biennial aims to address pressing human questions without relying on spectacle. Instead of conventional visual preoccupations, it will focus on interiority and other senses. Artists, curators, researchers, and publics will be invited to reimagine art and life possibilities. SAM Director Eugene Tan noted the biennale's role as a key platform for Southeast Asian art discourse. He emphasized its position as a regional art node connecting artists to global conversations. The artistic direction has been shaped by the pandemic's impact over the last two years. The team seeks to examine what it means to live in present conditions. The biennale will present art addressing urgent contemporary issues. It will create space for dialogue and collective reflection on art's forward role. The theme for this edition has not yet been announced. The Singapore Art Museum made the announcement about the upcoming biennale.
