Sin Wai Kin's 'Essence' Campaign Blurs Art and Advertising Across UK Billboards

exhibition · 2026-04-19

Visual artist Sin Wai Kin has created 'Essence,' a fragrance campaign that mimics commercial advertising to critique consumer capitalism. The project features the artist's drag king character Wai King as the face of a fictional cologne, with the tagline 'your true self awaits.' This summer, the campaign appears on billboards, digital signage, and bus stops across the UK as part of The Gallery, the country's largest public exhibition. Simultaneously, wall-based posters alongside film and sculpture components are displayed at Soft Opening's exhibition at Paul Soto in Los Angeles until 17 August. Sin Wai Kin explains that the work examines how desire is manufactured within consumer systems, using fantasy ideals to sell products. The artist's multidisciplinary practice employs speculative fiction to question idealized images and collective gazes. In an interview, Sin Wai Kin discussed their Jarman Award-nominated film 'Dreaming the End,' shot in Rome and exploring language's role in constructing reality. The film features costumes inspired by designers Cinzia Ruggeri and Robert Wun. Future projects include 'The Fortress,' premiering at The Lahore Biennale with locations at Lahore Fort and Alfalah Theatre, and 'The Time of Our Lives,' a science fiction sitcom opening at Accelerator in Stockholm in October before traveling to Kunstall Trondheim, Canal Projects in New York, and Blindspot Gallery in Hong Kong. The Gallery exhibition runs until 12 August.
