Simple Architecture Completes Classrooms for Migrant Learning Centre in Mae Sot

architecture-design · 2026-05-28

Simple Architecture, led by Jan Glasmeier, has completed a 175 m² classroom building for New Day School, a migrant learning centre serving Burmese refugee and migrant communities in Mae Sot, Thailand. The project was completed in 2024 and was curated by Miwa Negoro. Since the military coup on February 1, 2021, the number of Burmese refugees crossing into Thailand has surged. Help without Frontiers Thailand, a community-based organization, funds teacher salaries, lunches, and uniforms but lacks resources for infrastructure. The construction involved 15 local workers, 16 participants of a Hands-On Scholarship, 35 students from Harrow International School Bangkok, and 25 students from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL). Photographs were taken by Oliver Giebels, Isabel Goertz, and Alessandra Esposito.
