Simone Monsi's Tumblr-Inspired Installation at Goldsmiths Degree Show

artist · 2026-05-05

Simone Monsi, born in 1988 in Fiorenzuola d'Arda, has recently earned an MFA from Goldsmiths University of London and showcased his work at the 16th Quadriennale di Roma. During his Degree show in July 2016, he unveiled a significant installation featuring three components: transparent word banners made of plexiglass with emotional phrases sourced from Tumblr, two posters depicting Shinji and Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion, and a piece titled CAPITOLO FINALE: Let's Forget About It Let's Go Forward – From Meaning To Intensity, consisting of four sculptures adorned with sunset imagery and small tentacles. His installation reflects three stages of his research: the banners symbolize his initial fascination with decontextualized Tumblr content, the 'manone' sculptures explore the representation of hands in the digital age, and the posters hint at future projects influenced by Franco 'Bifo' Berardi's theories on post-workerism. Monsi also manages 14 blogs, including Congratulations!, Peacocks Inside My Head Forever, and Alone is the new together, which archive images that could evolve into artworks. He draws connections between melancholic social media memes and Bifo's writings, particularly his book Heroes, which examines the effects of technological and social changes on youth involved in mass shootings.
