Simon Steen-Andersen's 'Don Giovanni aux enfers' Opens Musica Festival's 40th Edition
The 2023 Musica festival in Strasbourg, running until October 1, opened with Simon Steen-Andersen's opera 'Don Giovanni aux enfers' at the Opéra national du Rhin (through September 21). The Danish composer's work reimagines Mozart's finale, sending Don Giovanni to hell with a multimedia collage of music from Monteverdi, Berlioz, Rubinstein, Robert Johnson, and Aerosmith. Steen-Andersen, a proponent of Jennifer Walshe's 'The New Discipline,' blends theatrical, visual, and musical elements. The festival, directed by Stéphane Roth, also features Joris Lacoste's spatialization of Luciano Berio's 'A-Ronne,' a night dedicated to Jean Catoire's works, and Olivier Greif's 'Les Plaisirs de Chérence' performed by Pascal Amoyel. The festival closes in Basel on October 1 with Steen-Andersen's 'TRIO' at Sportzentrum Pfaffenholz.
