Simon Starling's Aesthetic of Detours: Re-Making and Connecting
Simon Starling's artistic work challenges the norms of Western culture and ecology through the transformation of objects. In 1997, he altered a Marin Sausalito aluminum bicycle into an Eames chair in his piece Work, Made-ready. That same year, Blue Boat Black showcased fishing in the Mediterranean using timber sourced from the National Museum of Scotland. In 2000, he reversed the introduction of rhododendrons to southern Spain by relocating them from Scotland in Rescued Rhododendrons. Burn-Time, also from 2000, featured eggs prepared in a replica of a Wilhelm Wagenfeld egg cup. In 2001, CMYK/RGB transformed a disused synagogue in Cluj-Napoca into an exhibition venue in Montpellier. Born in 1967, Starling resides in Glasgow. His recent exhibitions include Secession in Vienna and Burn Time at Lichthaus Plus Neue Kunst in Bremen, running until November 4, 2001.
