Simon Starling's A-A', B-B' exhibition connects Tiepolo painting, Fiat car, and Italian industrial history
At The Modern Institute in Glasgow, Simon Starling presents his exhibition A-A', B-B', which includes a 1968 Fiat 125 Special that has been sliced in half, echoing Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's The Finding of Moses (c. 1730). Accompanying this piece is a lifesize replica of Tiepolo's A Halberdier in a Landscape, alongside clear acrylic that symbolizes the absent section. The Fiat showcases features such as burgundy upholstery, linking back to its previous owner, industrialist Giovanni Agnelli, who drove a navy blue 125 in Turin. The exhibition also references Dario Fo's 1981 play Trumpets and Raspberries, displaying a rebar-metal mannequin adorned with a Noh mask of Agnelli. It runs until 26 October 2019, delving into themes of masquerade, social class, and historical ties.
