Simon Mullan's 'Chronos' Transforms Club Space into Collective Video Installation

Artist Simon Mullan showcases 'Chronos,' a multi-channel video installation, during Gallery Weekend Berlin at Studio 1111, a club environment. This immersive piece combines raw MiniDV visuals with a fragmented narrative and sound design by Ed Davenport, echoing the rhythm of a club performance. Mullan highlights the contrast between this installation and its earlier version at Dittrich & Schlechtriem, where 25 unsynchronized screens resulted in a disjointed experience. In contrast, the linear setup at Studio 1111 promotes shared immersion. The videos reflect Mullan's early work with refugees and individuals with disabilities, captured on MiniDV, while sound plays a pivotal role in fostering equality in club spaces, a theme he examined during his studies at the University of Applied Arts and as a co-founder of Club Spezial. Additionally, his two-channel video 'Intermorior' (2011), featuring a knife thrower, will be on display at Gallery Gudmundsdottir until June 16th, exploring themes of vulnerability and trust. An event featuring DJ sets by Natalia Escobar, Aliar, and Horkheimer is scheduled for May 2, 2026, at Studio 1111.
