Silvio Frota Funds Fortaleza Photography Museum's Educational Focus Amid Public Funding Gap

Silvio Frota, director of the Museu da Fotografia Fortaleza (MFF), personally covers two-thirds of the institution's budget, emphasizing its educational mission over its collection. The museum, which opened in 2017 in a contemporary building in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, holds a collection of 3,000 works by photographers including Man Ray, Robert Capa, and Cindy Sherman. Before the pandemic, its programs reached 200 public school children daily, offering free transport and workshops in hospitals, correctional facilities, and nursing homes. Frota criticizes the lack of public and private investment, noting that banks profiting in the Northeast invest cultural funds in southern Brazil. The museum closed in March 2020, reopening later with a permanent exhibition curated by Diógenes Moura and a temporary show by Bob Wolfenson. Frota laments the pause in educational work that would have served over 60,000 children in 2020.
