Silvia Heyden's Musical Tapestries Return to Duke in Nasher Museum Exhibition Through 2026

exhibition · 2026-04-21

At Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art, the exhibition 'Silvia Heyden: Weaving Notes & Nature' showcases a retrospective of the Swiss fiber artist Silvia Heyden (1927-2015), renowned for her creation of over 800 tapestries. This display includes pieces from her inaugural solo exhibition at Duke, which took place 54 years ago, alongside significant works from the 1960s and 1970s, such as 'Tybee' (1967) and 'The Golden Rule' (1970). After relocating to Durham, North Carolina in 1966, Heyden found inspiration in the surrounding landscapes. Curator Dr. Julia McHugh emphasized the unity present in Heyden's creations. The exhibition, developed through the Curatorial Practicum course, will be available until June 7, 2026, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the Theory & Practice concentration.
