Silvano Gherlone, historic Turin gallerist of Davico, dies at 90

On July 11, 2021, Silvano Gherlone, the renowned gallerist of Galleria Davico in Turin, passed away at the age of 90. He was born in Turin on January 26, 1931, and initiated his career in 1970 with the Surfanta movement, collaborating with Lorenzo Alessandri and co-founder Vittorio Davico. After a period working with Alberto Peola, he took the helm of the gallery, emphasizing surrealism and magical, nocturnal art, while gradually incorporating realism from the late 1980s. Situated in the Liberty-style Galleria Subalpina, the gallery showcased notable artists, including Giovanni Macciotta and Francesco Tabusso. Known for his refined taste and support for emerging artists, Gherlone retired in 2004, handing over the gallery to Emilio Gargioni and Renata Lattes, which ultimately closed in 2013.
