Silk Road Samarkand: Mega tourism complex to open in Uzbekistan in 2022
A massive 260-hectare tourism, culture, and commercial complex called Silk Road Samarkand is set to open in summer 2022 in eastern Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Designed to boost tourism and attract high-end visitors, the complex overlooks a Soviet-era canal once used for rowing training. Its entrance will feature traditional motifs reminiscent of the arches of Registan, Samarkand's main square with its famous madrasas. The complex is divided into two zones: a Business Cluster on the north bank with a convention center and four luxury hotels, and a South Cluster with four boutique hotels, totaling 1,200 rooms. The standout is the 22-story, five-star Samarkand Regency Hotel with 234 rooms, including executive suites and two presidential suites. Surrounding amenities include sports fields, bike paths, a water park with multiple pools, restaurants, cafes, medical clinics, and shopping centers. Developed by an international team of architects and engineers, the project aims to combine thematic areas into a balanced architectural ensemble unprecedented in Central Asia. In scale, Silk Road Samarkand is positioned as a worthy successor to Uzbekistan's grand historical monuments. The article also provides historical context on Samarkand, founded over 2,500 years ago, which was capital of Timur's empire and a key Silk Road hub, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
