Signorelli's Frescoes Go Online in Ultra-High Definition

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

To mark the 500th anniversary of Luca Signorelli's death, the Opera del Duomo di Orvieto and Haltadefinizione have digitized his fresco cycle in the Cappella di San Brizio. Created between 1499 and 1504, the frescoes depict the Last Judgment and are now freely accessible online via a 360-degree immersive viewer. Haltadefinizione captured approximately 10,000 shots to construct a virtual version of the chapel, allowing users to zoom in without losing resolution. The work draws from theological literature, Dante's Divine Comedy, the Gospels, and Jacopo da Varagine's Golden Legend. Notably, Signorelli included a self-portrait at the edge of the Antichrist scene, beside a figure some scholars identify as Fra Angelico. Luca Ponzio, CEO of Haltadefinizione, stated that technology opens new horizons in art and culture, and this initiative aims to preserve and disseminate cultural heritage.
