Siena Cathedral's marble floor uncovered for limited viewing
The precious marble floor of Siena Cathedral, a masterpiece created between the 14th and 19th centuries using graffiti and marble inlay techniques, is unveiled to the public from August 18 to October 18, 2023. The floor consists of 56 scenes based on preparatory cartoons by Sienese masters and Pinturicchio, described by Vasari as "the most beautiful, large and magnificent ever made." Traditionally uncovered every August 16 coinciding with the Palio dell'Assunta, the floor is usually protected from foot traffic. During the unveiling, visitors can also see the wooden inlays by Fra Giovanni da Verona in the choir and apse, featuring urban views, landscapes, and still lifes. The Rector of the Opera della Metropolitana di Siena, Prof. Giovanni Minnucci, invites personal reflection. The floor's iconography includes ancient philosophers, sibyls, and biblical subjects, symbolizing a journey toward spiritual values.
