Sicily Bans Contemporary Art in Archaeological Parks
Sicily's regional government has ordered the removal of a contemporary art exhibition from the Segesta Archaeological Park, effectively banning future installations without departmental approval. The exhibition "Nella natura come nella mente," opened on April 13, 2022, featuring works by Mario Merz, Costas Varotsos, and Ignazio Mortellaro, was forced to close despite strong visitor numbers over Easter. Regional President Nello Musumeci justified the decision by stating that the "secular sacredness" of archaeological parks cannot tolerate cultural contamination. The order follows criticism from art critic Vittorio Sgarbi, who called the exhibition a "monstrosity" based solely on photographs. Regional Councillor for Cultural Heritage Alberto Samonà, who had inaugurated the exhibition less than two weeks earlier, signed a new directive requiring all contemporary art installations in archaeological areas to submit detailed exhibition projects for preliminary departmental authorization. The directive claims installations must be complementary to the archaeological context and not alter or damage it. Critics note that existing procedures already require departmental and superintendence approvals, questioning the real change. The move is seen as politically motivated ahead of local administrative elections. The article calls for urgent intervention from Italy's Ministry of Culture to clarify that cultural contamination is encouraged nationwide.
