Sicily allocates €5 million to restore 308 smaller theatres

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

The Sicilian regional government has allocated €5 million to restore and upgrade 308 smaller theatres across the island, as revealed by a survey conducted by the Regional Tourism Department led by Sandro Pappalardo. The funding, sourced from State transfers under Article 38 of the Statute, covers 100% of costs for public venues and 80% for private ones, with a minimum of €100,000 for structural renovations and €40,000 for technical upgrades. Governor Nello Musumeci emphasized that many theatres cannot open due to safety deficiencies, lack of technology, or missing fire exits. The initiative aims to preserve cultural heritage and support local communities, as theatres serve as memory keepers and community catalysts. A separate open call, "Anfiteatro di Sicilia," focuses on 17 historic stone theatres (including Segesta, Selinunte, Gela, and Taormina) for programming by companies and associations, evaluated by a five-expert commission. Musumeci also announced extended opening hours for the Greek Theatre of Syracuse beyond its current 1.5-month season tied to the National Institute of Ancient Drama (INDA). The plan was developed by Sergio Alessandro, Director General of Cultural Heritage, who called the investment "a concrete lifeline for a neglected sector."
