Sibari Archaeological Park opens museum deposits as participatory spaces

institutional · 2026-04-27

Massimo Osanna, Director General of Italian State Museums, opened the second session of 'An International Speech' on September 30, 2021, focusing on museum deposit valorization. The event, hosted by Formazione Scuola Patrimonio, featured speakers Mhammed Behel, Filippo Demma, and Federica Zalabra. Osanna advocated for transforming deposits into 'libraries of objects' for research and education. Filippo Demma, director of the Parco Archeologico di Sibari in Cassano all'Ionio, presented a case study: the park's deposits, traditionally called 'riserve', are being redeveloped with structural investments. The Museo archeologico nazionale della Sibaritide, currently under renovation, features a temporary participatory installation where visitors write comments on post-it notes on display cases. New archaeological warehouses will open to the public periodically. The site represents three civilizations: the Achean colony, Hellenistic center, and Roman settlement.
