SIAE Approves Four Free Photos per Article for Press

institutional · 2026-04-26

SIAE has approved a proposal to allow four free photos per article for press, both print and online, within the scope of news reporting. The decision follows months of criticism from Artribune and other media over restrictive copyright rules dating back to 1941. President Salvatore Nastasi announced the change on May 30, 2024, and the management council has now formalized it. The new policy aims to balance copyright protection with the needs of journalism, but critics note that the lack of differentiation between print and web may disadvantage online media. The controversy escalated in 2022 when the issue reached Parliament, and more recently when Repubblica left image spaces blank in protest. Artribune had engaged directly with SIAE, interviewing director Stefania Caponetti and lawyer Gilberto Cavagna di Gualdana, and collaborating with AMACI. The new rules take effect immediately.
