Shura Chernozatonskaya's Site-Specific Installations at Brooklyn Museum's Raw/Cooked Series
From January 27 to April 8, 2012, Shura Chernozatonskaya, an artist originally from Russia and based in Red Hook, presented her site-specific installations at the Brooklyn Museum as part of the Raw/Cooked series curated by Eugenie Tsai. Her work was displayed in the Rubin Lobby and Beaux-Arts Court, also reaching into the European Paintings Collection. In the lobby, a subway map-like arrangement of thirty-three canvases acted as a guide for attendees. Chernozatonskaya's pieces drew inspiration from Max Weber, featuring hand prints in the "Art and Devotion" section, while "Painting Land and Sea" illustrated dawn and aquatic scenes. Her "Woman" painting, located across from Picasso's "Woman in Grey," offered commentary on the abstraction of femininity. The review was authored by Brett Bachman and Anthony Palocci, Jr.
