Shubigi Rao to Lead Singapore's Venice Biennale Pavilion with Curator Ute Meta Bauer
Next year, Singapore will be represented at the Venice Biennale by Shubigi Rao, a notable achievement for the artist who was born in Mumbai. Rao's artistic practice frequently delves into the theme of banned literature, utilizing various mediums such as books, etchings, drawings, video, and archives. Last year, she received the Singapore Literature Prize for the second volume of her illustrated work, Pulp. Between 2003 and 2013, she embodied the fictional character S. Raoul, an archaeologist and theorist with diverse interests, including jellyfish and the impact of brain injuries in modern art. Additionally, Rao has been appointed co-curator for the upcoming 5th Kochi-Muziris Biennale. Ute Meta Bauer, a German-born academic and founding director of the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore, will curate the Singapore pavilion. Bauer has an extensive background, having co-curated documenta 11 in 2001/2002 and directed the 3rd Berlin Biennale in 2004. In 2019, Ming Wong was Singapore's representative at the Venice Biennale.
