Shooting at Teotihuacán Pyramids Kills One, Injures 13

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-20

On Monday, a 27-year-old man identified as Julio César Jasso Ramírez climbed to the top of the Pyramid of the Moon at the Teotihuacán archaeological site and opened fire on tourists. A Canadian woman was killed, and at least 13 people were injured, including six Americans, three Colombians, two Brazilians, a Russian, and a Canadian. The youngest victim was 6 years old; the oldest was 61. Ramírez then fatally shot himself. Authorities in the State of Mexico said the attack was premeditated: Ramírez had visited the site beforehand and stayed in nearby hotels. Videos show him firing from the pyramid while visitors fled. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called for stricter gun control at tourist sites, stating, "We need better security so that someone does not enter an archaeological site with a firearm." The site, a UNESCO World Heritage site, remains under reinforced security. The incident is expected to prompt immediate changes in protection policies for historical heritage and reignite debate on security in high-traffic cultural spaces.
