Shonky Exhibition Champions Awkward Aesthetics at Dundee Contemporary Arts
The exhibition 'Shonky: The Aesthetics of Awkwardness' is on display at Dundee Contemporary Arts, curated by John Walter and showcasing the work of 14 artists who embrace unconventional and amateurish art forms. Highlights include Kate Lepper's soft sculptures and installations by Benedict Drew and Plastique Fantastique, all influenced by punk, queer, and drag styles. Noteworthy pieces consist of Niki de Saint Phalle's drawings and sculptures depicting women-animal hybrids, with architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser's curtain setting the atmosphere. This intergenerational show features artists like Andrew Logan and Louise Fishman. As part of a Hayward Gallery tour, it explores the effects of shonkiness on cultural norms. The exhibition is open until May 27, 2018, before moving to Bury Art Museum from June 23 to September 15, 2018.
