Shirin Neshat: The Wind Blows in the Sails
Shirin Neshat, born in 1957 in Qazvin, Iran, and based in New York, has built her practice over the past decade around photography and film, gaining prominence in the last five years through video installations that address political and social realities of Iran and her own exile. Her works explore gender relations, freedom, solitude, desire, sexuality, and death, blending music, song, and choreography. Multiple exhibitions are ongoing: Castello di Rivoli in Turin (January 30 – May 5, 2002), Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (June 15 – September 8, 2002), and the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (September 28, 2001 – January 13, 2002). In an interview, Neshat discusses her work's dual audience in East and West, the risk of exoticism in depicting veiled women, and the tension between social cohesion and individual freedom. She explains that the veil is a reality in Iranian culture, not an exotic invention, and that her films like "Fervor," "Possessed," "Turbulent," and "Pulse" explore internalized taboos, madness as an escape, and subtle sexuality. "Passage," created for a New York exhibition at Barbara Gladstone Gallery (May 12 – June 22, 2001) with music by Philip Glass, deals with mourning and the cycle of birth and death, influenced by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and personal loss. Neshat plans to film in Iran despite challenges, and an exhibition in Tehran is proposed, though some works like "Pulse" may be excluded.
