Shirin Neshat's 'Body of Evidence' Opens at PAC Milan
Shirin Neshat (born Qazvin, 1957) presents a major survey at PAC – Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea in Milan, titled 'Body of Evidence – Il Corpo del reato,' curated by Diego Sileo and Beatrice Bendetti. The exhibition spans over 200 photographic works and a wide selection of videos from the early 1990s to today, including the series 'Women of Allah' (1993–1997) and video installations 'Turbulent' (1998), 'Rapture' (1999), 'Fervor' (2000), 'Soliloquy' (1999), 'Roja' (2016), 'Land of Dreams' (2019), and 'The Fury' (2023). The show explores themes of female identity, power, justice, and freedom, reflecting Neshat's experience as an Iranian-born, New York-based artist in exile. Neshat states: 'Today more than ever we need artists, culture that helps us, inspires us, provokes us, speaks to us and confronts the powers that be. We cannot remain neutral.' The exhibition closes with the final scene of 'The Fury' (2023), depicting a collective dance of rebellion in Brooklyn. The artist has received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale (1999), the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival (2009), and the Praemium Imperiale in Tokyo (2017).
