Shirin Neshat Designs Special Wine Edition for Ornellaia's Vendemmia d'Artista

market-auction · 2026-05-04

Iranian artist Shirin Neshat (born 1957 in Qazvin) has created a limited-edition wine label for Ornellaia's annual Vendemmia d'Artista project. The initiative invites international artists to design special wine editions, with proceeds supporting charitable causes. Neshat's design draws on Persian poetry and henna motifs, featuring female faces, hands, and bodies decorated with Persian calligraphy. The concept centers on wine as a moment of social sharing, inspired by the Persian poet Omar Khayyām. Proceeds from this year's edition will benefit the Guggenheim Foundation's Mind's Eye program, which helps visually impaired people experience art through all senses. Ornellaia has signed a three-year agreement with the Guggenheim Museum that may become a long-term collaboration. The artist created a special work for the estate, personalized 111 large-format bottles, and designed a unique label included in each case of six 750ml bottles. Eleven lots of Ornellaia Vendemmia d'Artista 2016 "La Tensione" will be auctioned online by Sotheby's Wine from August 29 to September 13, 2019, including ten 6-liter Imperials and one 9-liter Salmanazar. The final auction sum will be announced at an Ornellaia event at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice on September 13, 2019.
