Shirin Neshat and El Anatsui Win Praemium Imperiale Awards

On 12 September 2017, the Japan Art Association revealed the recipients of its Praemium Imperiale lifetime achievement awards. Visual artists Shirin Neshat and El Anatsui were honored alongside dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, architect Rafael Moneo, and musician Youssou N’Dour. Each laureate will be granted a 15 million yen stipend, approximately £103,000, during a ceremony scheduled for 18 October in Tokyo. The prize, established in 1989, annually acknowledges excellence across painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and film or theatre. Additionally, the Grant for Young Artists, supporting new initiatives for emerging talent, was awarded to the Beirut-based Zoukak Theater and Cultural Association. Led by Maya Zbib, this theatre collective will receive 5 million yen, about £34,000. The announcement was reported by The New York Times.
