Shinji Turner-Yamamoto and Gabriela Albergaria explore nature, migration, and time at Sapar Contemporary
Between February 15 and April 22, 2017, Sapar Contemporary in New York City showcased 'Substance and Increase,' an exhibition featuring the works of Shinji Turner-Yamamoto and Gabriela Albergaria, curated by Gregory Volk. This exhibition examined the intricate connection between humanity and nature without overt moral lessons. Albergaria's 2016 text piece, 'MOST OF US ARE TRANSPLANTS UPROOTED FROM OUR NATIVE SOIL,' focused on themes of immigration, while her botanical illustrations raised questions about native and non-native species. Yamamoto's 'Constellaria' series incorporated fossil dust and gold leaf, and his 2016 'Sidereal Silence' project involved paintings created from iron deposits. Additionally, 'Pentimenti #56' (2017) reimagined chapel fragments as gilded aggregates, encouraging contemplation of human-environment dynamics.
